Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) används rutinmässigt på kliniska laboratorier för identifiering av karaktäristiska proteinmönster hos bakterier och jästsvampar genom tolkning av proteinspektra i en masspektradatabas för korrekt artidentifiering.
