  1. 1. Methane Sulphonic Acid in East Antarctic Coastal Firn and Ice Cores and Its Relationship with Chlorophyll-a and Sea Ice Extent in the Southern Ocean

    Master-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Författare :Emma Nilsson; [2022]
    Nyckelord :methane sulphonic acid; firn cores; sea ice proxy; marine primary productivity; Fimbul Ice Shelf; Dronning Maud Land; metansulfonsyra; firnkärnor; havsis-proxy; marin primärproduktion; Fimbulisen; Dronning Maud Land;

    Sammanfattning : The seasonal retreat of sea ice in the austral spring and summer around Antarctica has a significant effect on phytoplankton activity, mainly due to light availability, meltwater input of dissolved iron, and surface water stratification. Phytoplankton produce dimethylsulfoniopropionate, the precursor to the climate-cooling gas dimethyl sulphide, which is ventilated to the atmosphere and oxidised to methane sulphonic acid (MSA). 2. 2. Records of environmental change and sedimentation processes over the last century in a Baltic coastal inlet

    Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Geologiska institutionen

    Författare :Hanna Nilsson; [2019]
    Nyckelord :Baltic Sea; eutrophication; coastal areas; archipelago; laminated sediments; nutrient inputs; carbon and nitrogen content; biogenic silica; sedimentation; environmental impact; marine geology; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Sammanfattning : The marine ecosystem in the Baltic Sea is affected by multiple stress factors, e.g. eutrophication and deoxygenation, overfishing and anthropogenic pollution. Here we evaluate the short-term trends of dissolved oxygen in bottom waters and changes in the primary productivity within a coastal inlet in the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Size and Abundance of Late Pleistocene Reticulofenestrid Coccoliths from the Eastern Indian Ocean in Relation to Temperature and Aridity

    Master-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för geovetenskaper

    Författare :Jeroen van Dijk; [2017]
    Nyckelord :coccoliths; abundance; biometry; circular polarized light microscopy; Late Pleistocene; Marine Isotope Stage 11; kokkoliter; mängder; biometri; cirkulär polariserat ljus; pleistocen; Marine Isotope Stage 11;

    Sammanfattning : Measurements on coccolith abundance and mass can be used as a signal of primary productivity and pelagic calcification in response to environmental change. The Leeuwin Current (LC) is known to transport warm and low-salinity waters from the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) southwards along the coast of West Australia. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Distribution of black carbon and its impact on Eutrophication in Lake Victoria

    Master-uppsats, Linköpings universitet/Tema Miljöförändring

    Författare :Moses Odhiambo; Joyanto Routh; [2016]
    Nyckelord :Lake Victoria; Eutrophication; Biomass burning; Black Carbon;

    Sammanfattning : Lake Victoria (LV), is the largest tropical fresh water lake. It is however facing a myriad of challenges like eutrophication, introducing species, mass extinction and climate change. Eutrophication has mostly been seen as a result of non-point pollution from upstream agricultural areas. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Microplastics in the marine environment - A threat to marine biota?

    Kandidat-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Miljövetenskaplig utbildning

    Författare :Birna Gudmundsdottir; [2016]
    Nyckelord :microplastics; marine environment; adverse effects; Earth and Environmental Sciences;

    Sammanfattning : Microplastics in marine environments are an emerging environmental problem of international concern. This review focuses on the sources, quantities and effects of microplastics, to assess whether or not they pose a threat to marine biota. LÄS MER
