The study is divided into three parts, where the initial one examines the concept of materiality, the second part maps the history and complexity of conservation, and the final part is based on three case studies of individual artworks. With the central theories deriving from Pierre Bourdieu, this study argues that the museum is an agent who is held to standards set by the art field and is dependent on this field to receive legitimization from other co-agents.
