  1. 1. The connection between the bow shock at Mercury and the interplanetary magnetic field

    Master-uppsats, KTH/Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap (EECS)

    Författare :Erik Sellberg; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Mercury bow shock; Bow shock - interplanetary magnetic field interaction; MESSENGER; Merkurius bogchock; Växelverkan bogchock interplanetära magnetfältet; MESSENGER;

    Sammanfattning : As the solar wind reaches Mercury it interacts with the planet’s magnetic field slowing down, forming a bow shock in front of the planet and diverting the flow around it. Along with the solar wind comes the interplanetary magnetic field, an extension of the sun’s magnetic field. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Identifying Fundamental Characteristics of Shock Nonstationarity using MMS Measurements : Identifying and Distinguishing Non-stationary Behaviour Through the Magnetic Field Gradient in Quasi-perpendicular Shocks

    Master-uppsats, KTH/Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap (EECS)

    Författare :Hannah Wik; [2023]
    Nyckelord :Space; Space Plasma Physics; Collisionless Shocks; MMS; Non-stationarity; Shock Reformation; Rippling; Bow Shock; Solar Wind; Rymd; Rymdfysik; Kollisionsfria chocker; MMS; Icke-stationär; Reformation; Bogchock; Solvind;

    Sammanfattning : Collisionless shocks are widespread phenomena in the universe, and understanding the mechanisms behind their energy dissipation, with a rare number of collisions between particles, remains a significant unresolved question. The Earth’s bow shock provides an excellent opportunity to study this phenomena in situ. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Using satellite data to calculate entropy of electrons at collisionless shocks

    Kandidat-uppsats, KTH/Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap (EECS)

    Författare :Sofie Berglund; Alice Wallner; [2022]
    Nyckelord :entropy; electrons; plasma; Earth’s bow shock; magnetic field; collisionless shock; plasma beta; Alfv´en Mach number; MMS; NASA; satellite; IRF;

    Sammanfattning : The solar wind is a supersonic flow of protons and electrons emitted in all directions from the sun. As the supersonic solar wind encounters Earth’s magnetic field, it creates the Earth’s bow shock, which increases the kinetic entropy of electrons passing through it. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Electron heating in collisionless shocks observed by the MMS spacecraft

    Master-uppsats, Luleå tekniska universitet/Rymdteknik

    Författare :Martin Svensson; [2018]
    Nyckelord :shocks; MMS; electron; heating; gradient; quasi-perpendicular; scaling; plasma; space;

    Sammanfattning : Shock waves are ubiquitous in space and astrophysics. Shocks transform directed particle flow energy into thermal energy. As the major part of space is a collisionless medium, shocks in space physics arises through wave-particle interactions with the magnetic field as the main contributor.The heating processes are scale dependent. 5. 5. Turbulence at MHD and sub-ion scales in the magnetosheath of Saturn : a comparative study between quasi-perpendicular and quasi-parallel bow shocks using in-situ Cassini data

    Kandidat-uppsats, Uppsala universitet/Institutionen för fysik och astronomi; Uppsala universitet/Institutet för rymdfysik, Uppsalaavdelningen

    Författare :Khaled Al Moulla; [2018]
    Nyckelord :Saturn; magnetosheath; bow shock; turbulence; Cassini; Saturnus; magnetoskikt; bogchock; turbulens; Cassini;

    Sammanfattning : The purpose of this project is to investigate the spectral properties of turbulence in the magnetosheath of Saturn, using in-situ magnetic field measurements from the Cassini spacecraft. According to models of incompressible, turbulent fluids, the energy spectrum in the inertial range scales as the frequency to the power of -5/3, which has been observed in the near-Earth Solar wind but not in the Terrestrial magnetosheath unless close to the magnetopause.
