    Sammanfattning : The Cambrian explosion not only shaped the ecosystems of the Phanerozoic, but fundamentally changed how biota interacts with the environment, including the substrate. Cambrian trace fossils Alectorurus and Syringomorpha as well as Ordovician-Silurian Daedalus represent novel modes of faunal interaction with the newly innovated shallow marine mixed-ground and have surprisingly limited stratigraphic ranges. Tubes of what was thought to be silica recovered from a partly dolomitized carbonate sample collected form a site near Indian Springs, Nevada could help further understand the chemistry and characteristics of such environments.     Sammanfattning : The lowermost Paleogene clastic infill of the Central Spitsbergen Tertiary Basin, the coal bearing Firkanten Formation, has been the subject of study for researchers in the past but little focus has been on the northeast edge of the basin until now. Due to the economic potential of the coal seams in the formation, the Norwegian mining company, Store Norske Spitsbergen Grubekompani (SNSG), has for several years conducted core drilling in key locations in basin, and for decades, they have given an access to their core material to researchers.
