1. Mandating transparency on deforestation and ecosystem conversion
Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Internationella miljöinstitutetSammanfattning : The production of eggs, meat, and dairy products in the EU indirectly contributes to deforestation and ecosystem conversion (DEC) in Latin America due to extensive imports of soy for animal feed. This thesis explores under which preconditions the mandatory European Sustainability Reporting Standards for the agriculture and farming sector can increase transparency in the opaque soy supply chains and incentivize reductions of imported DEC. 2. Increased carbon sequestration of actively restored tropical forests in Sabah, Malaysia : a comparison of natural regeneration and active restoration
Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Forest Ecology and ManagementSammanfattning : As restoration with assisted natural regeneration and enrichment planting becomes a more important and popular method to restore ecosystem services and mitigate negative climate effects, these treatments and their effectiveness is heavily debated. There are three main groups of opinions regarding restoration, one is that humans actively need to help nature recover and the second is that nature itself does a better job without our help and the third is somewhere in between. 3. Analysis of simulated functional diversity in tropical forests: Differences between cultivated and naturally grown secondary forests in Cambodia
Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskapSammanfattning : Accelerated deforestation represents a major global environmental concern. Over the last decades Cambodia has experienced a drastic decrease in forest cover and measures to halt deforestation have not been as effective as planned. LÄS MER
4. Evaluating forest restoration effects on timing of avian dawn chorus in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar
Master-uppsats, SLU/Dept. of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental StudiesSammanfattning : Monitoring of forest restoration efforts is essential to ensure healthy, self-sustaining tropical rainforests. Passive acoustic monitoring is used to monitor vocal activity of birds, which play a key role in forest ecosystems as seed dispersers. LÄS MER
5. Usability of Sentinel-1 C-band VV and VH SAR data for the detection of flooded oil palm
Master-uppsats, Lunds universitet/Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskapSammanfattning : Flooding in oil palm plantations in Southeast Asia is a common problem. The oil palm’s habitable range is restricted to lowland equatorial areas, and the high rainfall and degraded landscapes associated with oil palm cultivation leaves oil palm prone to flooding. LÄS MER
