Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study was to examine the factors behind school absenteeism and how career counselors work with these students to get them back to school. Four career counselors were interviewed to better understand this issue. Results show that students that do not go to school have low self-efficacy and come from families with poor family structure. Results also show that students with some sort of mental illness were related to school absenteeism, but also a family member diagnosed with mental illness could lead to a student not coming to school. School absenteeism and Bourdieus theory around the concept of habitus and social capital was also partly related to school absenteeism. The career counselors interviewed mean that the support from teachers and other staff members is crucial for the student to attend school. Students with school absenteeism experience a lower level of support from staff members at school. Further research is required to confirm the relevance of self-efficacy, habitus and capital and the level of support.
