Samuel Fahlberg "Liv och vetenskap på den Svenska kolonin S:t Barthelemy"

Sammanfattning: My intention with this paper is to describe and discuss the change in natural science from enlightentment to the romantic period in the context of Sweden also the legacy after Carl Von Linné and the detainment of Linnés ideas of nature outside the Swedish borders. I have used the common method of history of ideas, since describe ideas in their own context. In my theoretical starting points Wilhelm Dilthey's thoughts about hermeneutics and the hermeneutic circle have been of much use. Samuel Fahlberg (1758-1834) was born in Hälsingland and his parents worked as farmers. Early in Fahlbergs life he lost his father and twinbrother, wich made his mother deside that they had too leave their home and search for help in Stockholm ( they had some relatives in Stockholm and perhaps they could live there his mother thought). But sadly the ship they went by to the capital of Sweden capsides and the mother drowns, but Fahlberg manage to survive and where standing on the ice watching the ship sinking with his mother in it, a rather difficult start in life for a young boy. When he arraived in Stockholm he was adopted and well educated, he ended up as a doctor. He took service as doctor on a ship leaving to France. Well in France Fahlberg went with another ship to America where he participated in the war against the English. He was wounded in the battle and they sended him back too Sweden. Fahlberg was sent to the Island S:t Barthélemy as doctor in the new Swedish colony. After a couple of years problem accoured and Fahlberg is sentenced to death bye the supreme court in Sweden but never shows up for the trial. He got pardoned but never received the news of this before he dies in 1834 on the Island S:t Eustache.
