Sammanfattning: The aim of the study is to research preschool teacher’s understanding and way of talking about ethnicity and diversity in two different municipalities. The design of the methods performed for the study was qualitative and seven interviews have been done to gather empirics. The interview guide was semi-structured in order to be able to keep a flexible approach through the interviews. The result showed that how the preschool teachers work with ethnicity and diversity depends on a variety of factors. What they thought were important and if they worked or did not work with ethnicity and diversity was depending on the structure of the group. If the group of kids in the preschool included a diversity with a various of ethnicities in the preschool teachers worked more with the subject of ethnicity and diversity because they thought it was more important then. The result also showed that all the preschool teachers thought that the work with ethnicity and diversity was important, and the ones who worked with a group of kids that were not diverse in the structure of ethnicity thought they should work more with the topic. There was a tendency among the preschool teachers to talk about the subject of our study as sensitive and it was shown by the way they used words when they talked about it, such as “ cultural crash” and “ hot topic”. This can be explained with a discursive theory where the way you talk about topics in society can influence the public opinion in different matters, something that could be shown in the study. The program which has been made by the Swedish school system for preschool teachers to follow has an effect in the preschool teachers opinion and the way they work.
