Sammanfattning: Background: Depression and anxiety among the elderly is a problem that is widely spread. For health care workers, and especially for registered nurses, it is of great importance to find different strategies to counteract this.  Aims: This literature review aims to describe non-pharmacological measures to relieve depression and anxiety in the elderly.  Method: Search terms used were taken from Swedish MeSH and used in PubMed. All studies were randomized control studies and both authors took part in the quality review. Inclusion criteria were quantitative research, published in Swedish or English in the last 5 years. Participants were ≥60 years and either sexes or both were included. The included studies were conducted in different parts of the world. Exclusion criteria were individuals with dementia or mental illnesses other than depression and anxiety. Results:  Ten studies were included in this review, which implemented the following interventions: art therapy, detached mindfulness, meditation, music therapy and physical activity. Nine out of ten studies showed statistical significant improvement concerning levels of depression and/or anxiety when compared to baseline and control groups. Conclusion: This study indicates that several non-pharmacological measures can be used to relieve depression and anxiety.  Key words: aged, aged 80 and over, mental illness, relieving, non-pharmacological measures
