Sammanfattning: The underlying problem for this bachelor's degree thesis in Industrial Engineering andManagement within Energy Systems and Sustainable Development is the low level of materialrecycling of plastic packaging in Sweden compared with other recycled packaging. Most plasticsproducts are made from fossil fuels which, when burned, contribute to global warming and thatis the main reason for the increased greenhouse effect. By recycling plastic packaging instead ofincinerating them, great climate profits are made. The aim of the report is to investigate current and future plastic recycling systems in Sweden andcreate a business model to achieve a higher level of plastic recycling. The business model iscreated for the organization Förpacknings- och Tidningsinsamlingen, FTI, which in Sweden isthe organ responsible for collection and recycling of plastic packaging. The study is based on aliterature study that underlies a SWOT analysis of the recycling system, identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The strengths and opportunities of the system are takeninto account when designing the business model in order to find solutions to several of theidentified weaknesses and threats. Some significant weaknesses identified in the result section of the report are lack ofcommunication and information to the Swedish households, that not all households are sortingplastic packaging and that the quality of the recycled plastic is not always clear. The valueproposition of the proposed business model includes a standardization and certification ofrecycled plastic raw materials that lead to quality assurance of the raw material. That makes theproduct more attractive to the customers, which in this case are the plastic manufacturers. Inorder to enable a larger collection of plastic packaging, only kerbside collection is applied in thebusiness model and a more targeted and digitized communication with households is proposed.By implementing the featured business model, collected plastic packaging can increase, which inturn leads to an increased degree of recycled plastics. For this reason, the business model ismotivated to implement from an environmental perspective. The business model is alsoappealing from an economic point of view, as the stakeholders find financial incentives andbenefits. Finally, it is possible to integrate the collection and recycling of other packaging thatFTI is responsible for in the business model for plastic packaging.
