Sammanfattning: A good mental health is a basis for good quality of life and for everyday life to function well. The contrary to good mental health is mental illness, which is one of the most public health problems in Sweden whose ultimate consequence can lead to suicide and other bad habits. The aim of the study was to investigate what young men between the ages of 18- 24 years perceive affects their mental health. To be able to answer the purpose of study a qualitative method was applied. The six respondents of the study were selected through a targeted selection and data collection was completed with a semi-structured interview. The collected data was analyzed with a manifest content analysis, inspired by Graneheim & Lundman, 2004. Results of the study indicated that the factors young men perceived as prerequisites for mental health were to do various things that lead to good mental well-being. Factors that were perceived to be obstacles to mental health were gender inequalities, major challenges in the labor market, school stress, societal norms, negative effects of social media and to be surrounded by negative people. This study concludes that; achieving equal health in the population is a public health goal. That includes equal mental well-being between sexes, different age groups, individuals with different ethnic backgrounds, and individuals with different socioeconomic preconditions.
