Lakvattenutredning för Nyvång deponi

Sammanfattning: The aim of this master thesis was to investigate which leachate treatment methods are the most suitable for Nyvång landfill, Åstorp, with respect to the character of the leachate, best available technique (BAT), the circumstances of the facility and the leachate receptor. Firstly, assessments were undertaken of the leachate characteristics and the receptor’s conditions; nitrogen and phosphorus levels are too high, so the treatment has to focus on these two issues. A literature review of possible treatment methods was then undertaken which concluded that biological treatment would be suitable. Three possible methods were evaluated: continued treatment in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), an aerated lagoon combined with overland flow, and a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). Economically, WWTP is the most efficient method and does not cause any new environmental impacts. If the aerated lagoon method combined with overland flow is chosen, a 6.1 ha area is needed. This area does not exist at the facility today. Furthermore, a significant area will be contaminated and the costs are high. The last method, SBR, is aligned with BAT and although it is more technologically advanced, it is cheaper than aerated lagoon/overland flow. However, it does not meet the landfill owners’ requests. Operational cost for treatment in WWTP is now free but might be doubled to the cost for treatment in SBR or aerated lagoon/overland flow in the future. In conclusion, treatment using a WWTP is recommended. If local treatment will be necessary in the future, SBR appears better than aerated lagoon/overland flow. Nevertheless, an investment calculation and a life cycle analysis have to be performed to identify the best treatment method with respect to both economic and environmental costs.
