En verklighetsberättelse : en kvantitativ innehållsanalys av representationen mellan kvinnor och män i journaliststudenters examinerande reportage

Sammanfattning: A multitude of academic studies show that women have been, and still are underrepresented in journalistic products. A global study from 2020 covering the news content in 116 countries showed that women constituted only 25 percent of persons occurring in the content. The number for Sweden was 38 percent. Other studies show similar results. This study aims to shed light on the gender aspects of the Journalism programme at Lund University. By analysing the final examining journalistic texts, articles in long form, the students at the programme (at two consecutive course offerings) wrote, women’s/men’s representation and in which roles they occurred in were examined. The results showed similarities to previous research. Overall, women constituted 40.7 percent of the persons occurring in the articles. When they occurred they more often than men did it in the role of a minor character. As for when men occurred, they more often did it in the role of a mentioned celebrity. The other roles; main character, explaining actor and expert were equally distributed for women/men. However, since men generally are overrepresented they were more frequent in these roles as well. When looking at the two different course offerings the results showed a significant variation. For 2020 women constituted 36,2 percent of the occurring persons but for 2021 this number was 47.4 percent. A large majority, more than 70 percent, of the students were women. For 2020 women were roughly 60 percent of the students and for 2021 women constituted 80 percent of the students. The studied articles were divided into genres and worth noting is that all articles in the genre health/care were authored by women. The results from the quantitative content study were analyzed and discussed based on previous research, the course textbooks and Raewyn Connels gender theory.
