Hållbart resande i socialt utsatta områden
Sammanfattning: Road transportation is a large source of greenhouse gas emissions and contributor to climate change. To reduce the negative environmental impact from road transportation, the use of cars as a mode of transport should be reduced. This can be done by changed travel habits and sustainable transport planning. Previously, transportation planning and new investments have often been limited to higher socioeconomic areas, whereas low socioeconomic areas to a high degree have been left unconsidered. To achieve a sustainable transport system, both environmentally and socially, society should be considered as a whole. It is therefore of importance to study and understand the conditions of socially vulnerable areas as well. This study aimed to provide a deeper understanding of travel habits and attitudes in these areas towards a sustainable transport system. This was done by studying previous research and by analyzing data from travel surveys. A socially vulnerable area, Rosengård, in Malmö was chosen as a case study for the data analysis. The data from Rosengård was compared to a higher socioeconomic area, Västra Hamnen (also in Malmö) and the entire municipality of Malmö to identify possible differences, in relation to sustainable transportation, between areas of different socioeconomic status. Also, different subgroups, based on age, gender and origin, on Rosengård were analyzed from the travel surveys to identify possible differences between these groups. The results indicate that there are differences between lower socioeconomic areas and other areas, in regards to sustainable transportation. Although there is an environmental concern on Rosengård, transportation by car is still often perceived as a necessary mode of transport. Nevertheless, public transport is also rated highly. Therefore, future transportation planning is advised to consider all socioeconomic groups of the population in order to reduce car use and thereby reduce the negative environmental impact.
