Sammanfattning: Background: Diabetes is a growing public disease that affects all ages and both children and adults. Physical inactivity, smoking, consumption of alcohol, an unhealthy diet and abdominal obesity are common risk factors that can lead to the development of type 2diabetes. The disease can cause major complications over time such as kidney damage, nerve damage, eye damage and cardiovascular disease, which means suffering for those affected and leads to large societal costs. To prevent the development of type 2 diabetes, lifestyle changes play a crucial role. The diabetes nurse's health promotion work is important in order to be able to support and motivate patients to implement lifestyle changes. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to describe diabetes nurses ́ experiences of motivating and supporting patients with type 2 diabetes to perform healthy lifestyle changes. Method: The study is a qualitative interview study with eight diabetes nurses / district nurses (age 35-60 years) who work in primary care and have experience of diabetes care. The interviews were conducted remotely, and analyzed with content analysis. Results: Four categories emerged from the analysis: the diabetes nurse ́s approach towards the patient; the diabetes nurse ́s strategies for motivation; importance of collaboration and support; and to manage patients ́ hindrances and barriers. Conclusion: An important part of the work was to ensure that the patient and their relatives have the necessary information about the disease. In order to be able to motivate and support patients with type 2 diabetes, it is important that the diabetes nurses start from the patient's prerequisites and willingness to implement lifestyle changes.
