Sammanfattning: Title: Forgotten Role Models - A Qualitative Study on Selection and Equality in 20th Century Popular Music History Education Author: Anna Edström This paper is a qualitative study based on interviews with four music history teachers working at different levels in the Swedish educational system. The intention of the study is to describe how teachers regard their role as mediators of a cultural heritage, how they select educational material and how they work with equality in a subject which traditionally has male-dominated content. The results seem to show that teachers regard themselves as guides, that their objective is to give students a framework then to inspire them to search for more information on their own. Another set of results shows that the selection of educational material is based mainly on personal experiences and that it seems uncommon for music history teachers to use books as educational material. The tenets of the Swedish school system requires teachers to work with equality in all subjects, but this study seems to show that teachers do not have enough pedagogic methods and/or subject-matter knowledge, and in some cases lack the will, to bring equality into their instruction of music history.
