Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Statsvetenskapliga institutionen

Sammanfattning: The nuclear accidents of Chernobyl and Three Mile Island are two of history's most serious nuclear accidents to date. The purpose of this study is to analyze the decision making and the immediate crisis management of these two cases, to later make a comparison of the similarities and the differences. The method of this study will be a comparative case study. Doing a qualitative description of the two cases of Chernobyl and Three Mile Island through the use of carefully picked source material. The analysis will be realized through the use of the two theories logic of appropriateness and logic of consequence, and they will be used as ideal types throughout the analysis of the study. The results which the study presents are as follows; the cases are similar since it is the first time both of these states encounter such an accident, which can be seen with both states' decision making being more in nature with logic of consequence. At the same time it is clear how the institutions play a big role with its rules and norms in the decision making of the employees of the government, which leads to decisions being made more in line with logic of appropriateness, which differs depending on the institution.
