Hur arbetar kommuner för att minska köttkonsumtionen?

Sammanfattning: The municipalities' role in sustainable development is very important and research has shown that municipalities are increasingly working to reduce the climate impact of food, e.g. by reducing meat consumption. The purpose of this study was to examine how the municipalities in the Swedish region Skåne works with decreasing consumption of meat and what problems have occurred in the process. The results of this study show that 73 % of the municipalities are actively working on decreasing meat consumption and considers this question to be important, mainly due to its large contribution to greenhouse gas emissions but also due to related health consequences and costs. However, there is great potential to expand the work. Setting clear goals or criteria in the procurement for a minimum frequency of “meat-free days”, including environmental- and health impact of meat consumption as a part of education in schools, having information on environmental and health consequences of meat consumption on the municipalities’ websites and organizing information campaigns are a few examples. For the work to be taken forward, it requires support from students, parents, educators, politicians and everyone who otherwise may be affected. The knowledge of vegetarian and vegan foods is in many cases lacking in all these groups, which means that it may be difficult for them to understand why meat consumption has to decrease. Education, information and communication can therefore be mentioned as the most important factors for success.
