Detta är en Uppsats för yrkesexamina på avancerad nivå från Lunds universitet/Institutionen för psykologi

Sammanfattning: The aim of the present study was to examine and gain better knowledge regarding the working conditions for teacher assistants in Sweden. The study has a qualitative approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven participants who all were employee in public primary- and middle-schools. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the collected data. The following themes emerged: organizational factors (inexplicit working instructions, inexplicit role, recognition of the occupational group, difficult working environment), individual factors (internal driving force, self-awareness, alienation) and most beneficial for the student (correct support on time, security and continuity, stagnation versus development). The result showed shortcomings in the prevailing work situation. Particularly remarkable was the experience of lacking support to handle the demands at work and the lack of reward in relation to effort. In line with previous research, the result emphasizes the importance of a balance between demands and resources at work to create a sustainable working environment for the employees. The study highlights the importance of paying attention to this professional group and to offer support in order to create better working conditions. The study implies that the occupational group would benefit from specification of requirements and a clear job description.
