Last (wo)man standing : en studie av den kvinnelige helten og ”The Final Girl” i Alien og Prometheus

Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Genusvetenskapliga institutionen

Sammanfattning: The purpose of this bachelor thesis has been to discuss the role of the heroine in the movies Alien (1979) and Prometheus (2012). I have also looked at how the roles of ”The Final Girl” and the heroine are portrayed in light of each other. The possibly intriguing meeting between “The Final Girl”, the last surviving woman in a slasher-movie, and the science fiction heroine has been the driving force of the thesis. The questiones I have asked myself are: How are the two heroines in Alien and Prometheus portrayed, and what happens when the heroine and “The Final Girl” meet? My method has been film analysis, and my theoretical foundation has roots in feminist film theorists such as Laura Mulvey and Barbara Creed. I have found that both Ripley in Alien and Shaw in Prometheus are heroines who give up their own lives for others. They also follow the typical pattern of “The Final Girl”, but Ripley stands out as far more independent.
