Sammanfattning: Aim: The aim of this descriptive literature study is to increase the understanding of the relationship between quality of life, depression, dementia and hearing impairment, and how hearing rehabilitation can affect the quality of life amongst elderly patients.Research method: A descriptive literature review with 19 scientific articles published between the years 1997 and 2019, regarding hearing impaired elderly aged 50 years and above, have been reviewed. Results: There is likely a connection between hearing impairment, depression and dementia amongst elderly people. Hearing rehabilitation can improve the quality of life in elderly with hearing impairment, as it potentially has a protective effect against depression and dementia. Conclusion: Hearing rehabilitation increases the quality of life amongst elderly with hearing impairment. Scientific evidence shows that hearing impairment amongst elderly might cause depression and dementia. However, there are also scientific studies that have not found this connection. There is no consensus, therefore, we cannot draw any conclusion if hearing impairment can cause depression or dementia.
