Sammanfattning: The purpose of the study is to investigate what unmotivated pupils´ experiences, thoughts and feelings of the school subject physical education and health. To understand the pupils´ experience of physical education and health the Self-Determination theory has been used and the study has been based on the needs for competence, relatedness and autonomy to analyse the pupils´ motivation. A qualitative method was used and focus group interviews were chosen as method for collecting data. The study used a data analysis of coding where the transcribed material from the focus group interviews was read through and linked to the keywords. The study was conducted at a countyside school and a total of seven pupils divided into three already existing groups participated in the survey. The results showed that unmotivated pupils rarely get the basic needs of relatedness, competence and autonomy satisfied. The results also showed that there are times when pupils´ have these needs met and want to participate in the physical education and health lessons and that pupils´ can be driven by external motivation but still feel joy in the physical education and health lessons. The conclusion is that there are times when the pupils´ have their needs met and they then want to participate in the lessons. As a teacher in physical education and health can self-determination theory's three needs competence, relatedness and self-determination be used as starting point and in that way develop the teaching so that these pupils are motivated to participate.
