Sammanfattning: To Make the Complexity of Tolerance Visible. An overall purpose of this essay is to study the development of the term “tolerance”. I carry out a conceptual research and a historical background to this and I also try its significance towards certain experiences as a teacher. The purpose of my essay is to investigate how these experiences, in which some type of dilemma has arisen, serve as a tool for processing tolerance for me and others. This is done in the context of a teacher and as a companion in Erasmus + projects in Europe. The method is an autoethnographic and hermeneutic approach with three narrative descriptions as a starting point for reflection and analysis. Tolerance is discussed as virtue, as an educational tool and as a necessary interpersonal relationship in the situation of a democratic society. Empathy and play plays a role in tolerance.
