Sammanfattning: In today´s society, students are expected to have the understanding necessary to make informed career decisions that align both their interest and education with a rapidly evolving job market. Parents are an important figure in the child´s decision-making process. Therefore, it is useful to gain a better understanding of the parents´ perspective to better meet the needs and ambitions, of not only the students but the parents as well. This qualitative study included six interviews with twelve parents of children attending grade 9. The results were analysed using Pierre Bourdieu´s key sociological concepts, capital, habitus and field. The questions we aim to answer are as follows: How do parents' reason when it comes to education? How do the parents' reason about their engagement and influence on the child in the decision-making process? Lastly, how can this be understood from the parents' educational background?Regarding the educational choice, the results of the study indicated that parents are aware of the importance that their children need to make these choices independently. However, the study also showed that parents held firm beliefs as to what they considered a good choice for their child and would consequently attempt to influence their child's career and education decisions to meet their beliefs. As long as the child's choice was in accordance with the parents´ belief system, it resulted in the parents expressing confidence in the child´s decision-making abilities and felt little need to get involved.
