Sammanfattning: This study centers around the way society’s gender norms affect the way children read and their reading habits. Reading is important for people to become functional members of a democratic society as it acts as the foundation for high levels of information literacy. With these abilities they will have an easier time navigating and critically assessing the information they will come across in everyday life. 24 children in the ages of 10–11 years participated in group interviews where discussions regarding their reading and library usage ensued. The results of these interviews were then analysed using a norm critical perspective as well as Aidan Chamber’s Reading Circle and the four compliance mechanisms. The children interviewed had positive views of reading and literature and they enjoyed genres such as fantasy, crime and horror. However, whether or not they shared their love of reading with the people around them differed between the genders where girls did this the most. The parents and other adults in the children’s lives also impacted the children’s view of reading and there were gender based differences among the adults as well, almost more. Gender norms seem to have less of an effect on today's children compared to previous generations.
