The Illusion of Totality: Critical Discourse Analysis on the Identity of Japanese Bureaucrats inside and outside of the Ministries

Sammanfattning: The collective identity is under permanent negotiation. Due to the lack of incentive to offer public communication, the collective identity of Japanese bureaucrats; kanryo(官僚) has been constructed separately inside and outside of ministries. Firstly, I explore how the collective identity of kanryo has been constructed in two Japanese national newspapers. Also, the constructed identity of kanryo will be illustrated. Secondly, I will illustrate the constructed identity inside of the ministries. The comparison of the two discourses and the reflection on its result will conclude my thesis.
