Sammanfattning: The debate about Daddy Months in the Swedish parental insurance as a method to increase gender equality is lively. Advocates for Daddy Months mean that making a part of the parental insurance only available to father’s, increases gender equality while opponents mean that they restrict individual autonomy. The biggest debate in today’s political philosophy is supposedly between communitarians and individualists. Two of the Swedish parties in parliament are individualistic in the sense that the they value the individual over the community and mean that the state is supposed to stay neutral in each individual’s life choices. At the same time they argue for different positions in the debate concerning Daddy Months. This paper aims to define an equal autonomy principle based on theories from a number of individualist philosophers. The arguments for Daddy Months are normatively analyzed with the purpose to examine if Daddy Months can be justified according to the equal autonomy principle. The equal autonomy principles goal is that the consequences of state interventions ensure each individuals autonomy. Since the result of Daddy Months have not yet been proven, the question of if they are justified according to the equal autonomy principle is still unanswerable.
