Sammanfattning: This master thesis examines firstly what competence a furniture maker in Stockholm, Sweden during the period 1751 – 1782 required to make a master piece. This is done through a literature study, archive research and research on preserved master pieces. I analyse and generate a base of material knowledge, period tools, construction and techniques. As a result, I identify a number of visual components, technical components and joints used in these masterpieces. Secondly, I will examine previous attempts of craft science. The purpose is to show an example of how practical knowledge can be used as a tool in academic research, and how the research can be used in practical investigations. A well working technique to preserve practical knowledge in an academic context is procedural reconstruction. There are challenges with finding the balance between the academic work and the craft in a way that draws the advantage of both parts. Summary and conclusion in English at the end of the thesis.
