Sammanfattning: “Together for belonging” : A case study in a not-for-profit group for immigrant mothers in Rosengård This essay examines how immigrant women in Malmö (Rosengård), use a not-for-profit group to find ways to navigate their everyday lives. The aim of the study is to get a deeper understanding of the functioning of the group. As an ethnographic case study, I participated as an observer during group meetings and interviewed the founder of the group. I used Bourdieu and Skeggs’ to apply a class perspective to be able to understand the women's habits in their everyday lives. To understand why the women felt the need for the group I used Anthias’ definition of belonging and Turner's theory of transitions (liminal positions). This showed how the women navigate through their two cultures and how this affected their role as mothers. I found that the women were in a process of transformation and were finding their way through their new society. This process is about belonging and increasing their social and cultural capital. The group allows the women to gain strength which could change their social conditions for the better. I argue that the women create a feeling of belonging within the group and in society at large. The group also provides a secure environment for the women to feel interrelated and to be at ease. This in turn gives them the opportunity to develop themselves and their motherhood.
