EU-migranter i media : en kritisk diskursanalys

Detta är en M1-uppsats från Stockholms universitet/Institutionen för socialt arbete - Socialhögskolan

Sammanfattning: The aim of this study is to examine discourses on EU migrants and how roma migrants, who are begging in Sweden, are represented in Swedish newspapers. To do this a critical discourse analysis of four texts was performed, starting with a debate article in which the Swedish conservative party “Moderaterna” advocates for a ban of organized begging. We used Critical Discourse Analysis and Orientalism as theoretical perspectives. By using the theory of Orientalism our aim was to analyze if the texts produce and reproduce images of the EU migrants as The Other. An overall purpose of the study has been to examine if the texts harbour antiziganistic images. Our analysis indicates that the texts are producing ideas of the EU migrants as a threat and an outsider that needs to be controlled by Us. Our conclusion was that even though the texts are not explicit antiziganistic they do portray EU migrants as The Other and act antiziganistically. We also found two main discourses in the debate about the EU migrants, in one discourse law and order is central and in the other the welfare state is central.
