Utvecklingen av IKEAs miljöredovisning : en analys av perioden 2017-2020

Sammanfattning: The purpose of this study is to analyze the development of IKEAs sustainability reports by focusing on environmental issues. Analyzed time period was between 2017 and 2020. The aim was to answer the research question whether IKEA is sending symbolic or substantive message through its sustainability reports. It was done with a longitudinal single case study. Content analysis was used for collecting the analyzing empirical data. The empirical data was analyzed through theoretical lens. Two theories were used in the process, stakeholder’s theory and legitimacy theory. Information from IKEA’s sustainability reports were connected later to four legitimization strategies: conciliatory, transparency, stimulation and transformation strategy. These strategies are designed to clarify if the sent message is symbolic or substantive. Result can be presented through three main conclusions. The first one is that stakeholders are important for IKEA and that they can affect their business. The second conclusion draws parallels between mandatory and voluntary environmental reporting. The last conclusion is answering the question about symbolic and substantive message. IKEA’s message is substantive.
