Märken i mörker. Stenhuggarmärkena i Lunds domkyrkas krypta

Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Historisk arkeologi

Sammanfattning: In the construction of large stone buildings, there have always been many craftsmen involved. The traces from these workers are mostly just the buildings itself but in some cases, like for the stonemasons, some other traces can be seen, such as the Mason's marks. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate where the Mason's marks in the crypt of the Lund Cathedral are and if it is possible to see any pattern in age or the main presence. All this has been done by manually registering the marks and then interpreting them. 246 Mason's marks, divided in 93 types, have been registered. Most of them are found in the northern and southern parts in the crypt with 80 marks in the first mentioned part and 82 in the second. An attempt to date the found marks has been done and 5 of them are dated to the 13th century and 179 to the 19th century. The remaining 62 have not been dated due to damaged stones or marks. The question about similar marks and if they should be interpreted as the same marks with a few added or removed details, consciously or not, and the marks in different directions, is discussed. Unfortunately there is no easy answer and each mark has to be interpreted by itself to answer this.
