Sammanfattning: The subject of history is one of the subjects in the Swedish schools where the textbook is used most. The textbook can be seen as paratextual as it forms students and teachers' perception of what type of content (knowledge) that is premiered. In other words, the textbook can be seen as the primary focus of knowledge. Pupils as active readers are influenced by the knowledge given. With the removal of state-of-the-art examinations in 1991, high demands are placed on teachers to choose a textbook that corresponds to the documents they are expected to follow. This textbook analysis of two history books, focuses on the text and an investigation of how the text is presented by modalities. The aim of the study is to search values beyond categories and explicitly examine the formal text. The result shows that where modalities occur, so does a certain representation. This representation leads to dicotomies, that in turn leads to othering of one part of the dicotimial pairs.
