Sammanfattning: The Swedish population is growing and is expected to hit 11 million in 2025, at the same time there is a lack of residence. Beside the need to construct residence there is also a need for increased infrastructure for a growing city. The big amount of investments demands cheaper constructions by efficient processes with less resources and shorter construction time. To be competitive on the market the contractors need to have control of their construction processes and project management. Due to a larger degree of uniqueness in infrastructure projects compared to residentials there have been less development addressing efficiency and project management in this field. One of Sweden’s biggest contractors, NCC, has developed descriptions of standard processes and documents for managing the projects to keep the competitiveness on the market and to ensure a high quality. Despite this development, the content in processes and documents, are perceived as inadequate. The problem addressed in this study, is to find the difference between PMI’s PMBOK construction extension and a contractor’s described project management and its practice. The result of the comparison between PMBOK and NCC:s described project management show that some activities are included by both PMBOK and NCC, some activities are missing in either PMBOK or NCC and some are included only partially by NCC or PMBOK.   In practice, the result show that the executed activities follows the NCC:s described project management. The biggest issue is the understanding of why the activities are made and how they should be used.
