Damer äro portförbjudna då man misstror deras medlidsamma hjärtan : En studie av en aristokratkvinnas rörelsefrihet
Sammanfattning: This essay will examine the liberty of movement through the analysis of a traveling journal written by the young aristocratic lady Lovisa Catharina Trolle-Wachtmeister in the year of 1832, during her family’s travel through Europe. The beginning of the nineteenth century brought many books of adventure and traveling because of the new possibilities to rent a horse and carriage and therefore travel longer distances for a shorter amount of time. To travel, people needed the time and money, and therefore the adventures were quite exclusive to the aristocratic class of Sweden. In this essay, I have studied the traveling journal of Lovisa Catharina Trolle-Wachtmeister (The Archive of the Nordic Museum, Document "Dagböcker 1832–1833", 9:21) with the intention to analyse her own experience of her liberty of movement during her travel, as an aristocrat with money and respectability and therefore more possibilities, and as a woman with a restraint due to the role she was given because of her sex. The body is of great importance in this essay, because of its role in the liberty of movement, and of the restraints ascribed to Lovisa's body as a woman. Because of the importance of the body, the theories of this essay consist of phenomenology, with Sara Ahmed's concept of orientation, and with the concepts of living body and body knowledge, as well as gender theory with Yvonne Hirdmans' concepts. In my conclusion, I have found that the inherency of the aristocratic class gives Lovisa a greater liberty of movement and expression, while her sex is of more importance because it is fundamental and therefore places her in a role of constant orientation towards the rules of the space she inhabits. The young lady's living body is under restraints because it is out of place, and through an orientation which proves Lovisa's respectability she can earn some liberty of movement because of her class, with an understanding of her correct orientation towards the norms and social structures.
