Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Socialhögskolan

Sammanfattning: The purpose of our study was to examine the prevailing norms of mental illness, and how it is portrayed in popular culture, by analyzing four selected feature films that all highlight mental illness of some kind. We have done this through a qualitative study with a thematic analysis, in which all four films have been studied thoroughly. The study has a social constructivist approach since our way of talking about and representing mental illness in feature films constitutes on how we experience the world. We have also used the concepts ‘norm’ and ‘stigma’ to analyze the empiricism. The results that we found confirms commonly-occurring notions of mental illness but also some prominent elements that challenge and contradict these beliefs.
