Sammanfattning: The deployment of BIM (Building Information Modeling) in the Swedish building industry has begun. A BIM-model, briefly explained, is an object orientated 3D model that contains the available information about a building. Currently it’s mostly used for enabling a more effective collision control, quantity takeoff and production of shop and construction drawings. Thanks to its 3D nature it is easier to produce consistent floor plans and sectional drawings and to achieve better collision control. An important aspect of the BIM model, compared to a pure 3D model, is that it’s computable. This aspect is used by NCC today to carry out automated quantity takeoffs. This master thesis focuses on how to use BIM to streamline the design phase of building construction. To examine how BIM can be used to achieve this goal, a number of BIM-enabled applications are evaluated. Autodesk Revit Structure 2011 is evaluated regarding modeling, storage and transfer of the BIM model. Autodesk Robot Structural Analysis Pro 2011 and Strusoft FEM Design 9.0 are evaluated regarding their integration with Revit Structure. The result of the evaluation is that it’s advantageous to use BIM in the design phase, using software available today. The modeling can be more effective using Revit Structure and the duplicated work of creating separate models for drawings and analysis is mostly avoided. It’s easier for the engineer to picture the workings of the structure since it’s modeled both physically and analytically in Revit. The outcome of the analysis and design can be incorporated into the Revit model, either manually or automated, and this can result in a better coupling of the analytical model and the one used for producing drawings. But to fully realize the potential benefits of BIM, the following features should be supported by the software: · All information required to perform analysis should be storable in the BIM model and transferable to the analysis software. · All information generated and modified by the analysis software should be transferable and storable in the BIM model. These features are not yet fully supported by the evaluated set of software. One of the reasons for this is the lack of support for a working standardized and fully open file format that can be used to store and transfer the BIM model.
