Sammanfattning: Background: Worldwide atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhytmia in adults, the prevalence increases with increasing age. Atrial fibrillation can cause a wide range of symptoms, experienced as anything from mild to severe. Atrial fibrillation is a chronic disease which is non-fatal, but causes a significant burden for some patients. The disease is a concern to many individuals who experience that atrial fibrillation and its symptoms affect daily life and quality of life. Aim: To describe patients experiences of living with atrial fibrillation, what impact it has on daily life and what patients express that they need to experience participitation and support. Methods: A literature review with qualitative approach has been implemented based on 12 scientific articles compiled to a result using content analysis guided by Graneheim and Lundman. Results: Bodily symptoms of atrial fibrillation cause emotional reactions. The emotional response is affected of the individuals knowledge and understanding of atrial fibrillation. This along with the management strategies that patients embraced and the unpredictability concerning atrial fibrillation contributed to impact of daily life. Understanding and being able to accept the diagnosis was a key factor in order to be able to make intentional adjustments and integrate the disease in daily life. Relatives and healthcare personnel could provide support in the process. Healthcare personnel was seen as a reliable source of information and their response contributed to the feeling of support and participitation in contact with healthcare. Conclusion: Lack of knowledge and misconceptions among with unpredictability in never knowing when an episode of atrial fibrillation will occur, the atrial fibrillation was always present. To experience support and participation, patients needed to feel that the nurse listened to them and meet them with respect and dignity.
