Sammanfattning: Organizations are becoming increasingly challenged in terms of increasing competition and workers' demands on their workplace. The demands are, among other things, that employees seek organizations with similar values ​​as themselves, and that the flexibility of working conditions is an increasingly important part of the labour market and this puts demands on organizations. Over the last few years, it has been found that staff is an organization's most valuable resource, and this should be focused on more, one way of appreciating its staff is through competence development. Competence development can be seen as a reward and can act both as a contributing factor to the sense of appreciation of employees and also benefits the productivity and efficiency of the business. Engagement has a major influence on the results of competence development and this relationship is the focus of this essay. This essay is completed with a qualitative method and eight semi-structured interviews have been conducted. The purpose of the paper is to investigate the relationship between competence development and engagement in a municipal activity. The selection consists of eight first-line managers in disability care, which are employed in the same municipality and work in the same working group. The result has been analysed using qualitative content analysis, previous research and theories related to engagement and competence development. The result shows three factors that are of the greatest importance in the influence of the participants' degree of engagement and these are, surroundings, appreciation and flexibility. The result could be interpreted as the organization is having development potential within what could be focused on according to this result is to chart the participants' basic internal engagement and to adapt it to what kind of skills development is offered that the results of the education should be as good as possible. These factors are consistent with previous research but also indicate new approaches. The analysis aroused a curiosity about gender and it would therefore be interesting to approach the area in perspective about gender in further research.
