Sammanfattning: Authors: Malin Andréasson and Elin Ohlsson Title: Mediation on TV. Constructions of mediation, offenders and victims. Supervisor: Katarina Jacobsson Assessor: Hans-Edvard Roos This study investigates the social constructions of victims and offenders in the Swedish documentary TV-series “Face to face” [“Öga mot öga”]. The representation of mediation as a crime preventing practice is also considered. From a social constructionist perspective, seven episodes of the series were transcribed verbatim and analyzed qualitatively. The main results of the study are that victims in the documentary series are constructed as ideal victims while the stereotypical image of an offender is “deconstructed”. Rather, the offenders participating in the documentary series are described as “regular people”. The discourse of mediation casts the phenomenon in an exclusively positive light.
