Sammanfattning: The aim of this study is to examine how the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet construct the image of female and male football players during the 2018 and 2019 World Cup in football. In addition to this, the study aims to investigate what ideas about gender and nationality are portrayed in the material.  A qualitative content method was used for the execution of the analysis, together with gender theory and framing theory. The study concluded that media still constructs different images of male and female athletes. However, it is not as diverse as it has been according to previous studies. Although there are still old and new ways in which gender stereotypes are being portrayed. These differences can be explained by sports still being a male dominant sphere that idealizes masculinity. The fact that the articles was published during a major sport event, added elements of nationalism in the articles. The conclusion of this study is that even though female and male sportsmen still are portrayed differently in the media, there has been a change in the society that also reflected in the way media portrays athletes. However, there still exists a male dominance that is also related to national identity.
