Sammanfattning: Investments in public transport has in recent times become a relevant subject, as a result of rapid urbanisation and a trend toward moving to sustainable modes of transport. This work aims to investigate which factors make up the basis for decision making in the field of public transport. More specifically this work will investigate the effects of implementing a new commuter rail station, by performing a case study. The case study focuses on building a new commuter rail station in Fagersjö, located in southern Stockholm. The sole operator of this station will be the Stockholm commuter rail, which is a system part of the public transport in Stockholm. The study contains two sections, one where literature and documents are studied and one section where a technical analysis is performed by running simulations in the program PTV Visum. The work shows that different prerequisites concerning travel demand and the amount of trains stopping at the station results in varying degrees of profitability when performing a cost benefit analysis (CBA). The conclusions are that the winners of a new station are the inhabitants living within the catchment area of the station, while the losers are people traveling from stations further down the line due to receiving an increased travel time. No definitive conclusion can be made regarding if a commuter rail station should be built in Fagersjö or not.
