Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Högskolan i Skövde/Institutionen för handel och företagande

Sammanfattning: The banking industry in Sweden is an industry that operates under strict regulations and a competitive market. Two of the major players in the banking industry in Sweden are Handelsbanken and SEB. The study deals with how these two actors relate to structure, the study will treat this as centralization and decentralization. The study also deals with the manager's work and decision making. The purpose of the study is to describe and analyze similarities and differences in the structure and in the work of managers in Handelsbanken and SEB. The study specifically aims at studying how the structural contexts of decentralization and centralization create the conditions for managers' work in an industry with strong regulation and fierce competition. The study questions are:How can differences and similarities between Handelsbanken and SEB's organizational structures be described with focus on the concepts of decentralization and centralization? How can managers' work in Handelsbanken and SEB be described and how do managers perceive their decision-making and mandate? The study is done as a comparative case study where Handelsbanken and SEB have been compared on these points. As a result, the organizational structure could be described as a long-term growth in both companies, Handelsbanken as more decentralized and SEB as more centralized. The managers' work is different so that they face different demands. The work that managers in Handelsbanken face is more administrative, and there they can spend more time, but they still see their work as free. The managers of SEB describe their work as strictly and controlled, they feel pressure from above to perform. Banking decisions differ to a lesser extent, the managers at Handelsbanken consider themselves more decision-making than SEB, especially that they can make faster decisions than the managers at SEB say they can.
