Sammanfattning: The aim of the study was to investigate school counselors’ discretion and increase the knowledge of how it can approach and challenges it poses. Four school counselors’ were interviewed. To this study, I used semi-structured interviews. Themes such as large or limited discretion, relationship creation and trust emerged in the analysis. The study was empirically grounded and the results emphasized on a general level. For the analysis I used Goffman’s dramaturgical perspective, the theoretical concept of discretion and a power perspective. The study’s result showed that the school counselor experiences both large and limited discretion because their mission was vaguely worded. In collaboration with teachers, which is a part of the school counselors mission, the discretion appeared to be limited because both teachers and school counselors had different ideas of how the school counselor should work. In the meeting with students, school counselors’ latitude was limited by the notification requirement, because they risked to lose the students’ trust.
