Hur kultur formar narrativ : En jämförande studie av sociokulturella värden i västerländskt och österländskt berättande

Sammanfattning: This is a comparative cultural study from a literary perspective, focusing on characterization in Western and Eastern storytelling. By comparing a selection of Korean dramas with Anglo-American TV series and films, I want to examine possible similarities and differences in the character representation, emotional expressions and philosophies of the stories, as well as how these may be grounded in different cultural structures. For this purpose, I will mainly be focusing on Train to Busan (2016, directed by Yeon Sang-Ho) and The Walking Dead (2010-2022, by multiple directors), as well as The King's Affection (2021, directed by Song Hyun-Wook) and House of the Dragon (2022 -, by multiple directors). I will use these examples, containing certain similarities in terms of genre, setting or story structure, in order to more easily compare how the characters are portrayed in similar situations and environments, and thus show important differences in the behaviors and values portrayed in each work. I examine the worldview depicted in the stories by looking at how the characters are responding to different situations - focusing on the attitudes and behaviors portrayed in each work related to different cultural values - ans seek answers to the following questions: What differences are portrayed in the characters' mentality, morals and values? What behaviors are socially acceptable within these fictional worlds, and what does that imply about the culture in which the works are based? What emotions and ideologies do these television series and films seek to convey to the audience? Varying aspects of these questions will be examined in relation to each story, depending on their relevance to the respective works, but they are all based on which emotional expressions and behaviors are considered the norm or ideal within the respective culture.
