Sammanfattning: The purpose of this thesis is to determine which economic factors affect domestic violence. The dataset contains aggregated data over the years 2012-2018 for Swedish municipalities. The variables are chosen to link the empirical model to established economic theory on domestic violence, following the seminal contribution by Becker (1973). The variables included in the empirical analysis are unemployment rates, wage gap ratio between males and females, GRP and total crimes. Two regression models are specified and estimated: model 1 is a pooled OLS regression and model 2 is a fixed effect regression. The results give evidence that the number of reported cases of domestic violence is lower in municipalities with higher GRP, and a smaller gender income gap. The results are inconclusive regarding the effects of unemployment on domestic violence.
