Idrottslärares sociala konstruktioner av tjejer på idrotten i högstadiet – en kvalitativ studie
Sammanfattning: In modern society, there are established norms around male and female beauty and body ideals, not least in the world of sports. These norms and ideals are present in the schools’ physical education as well. The aim of this study was therefore to explore physical education teachers’ social construction of girls in physical education, from the vantage point of girls’ participation in physical education, attitude to the class, and the opportunity to participate. The method chosen for this study was qualitative, semi-structured interviews with eight different physical education teachers, from different lower secondary schools in Sweden. In analysing our results, we applied Vivien Burr’s idea of social constructionism, and Yvonne Hirdman’s theory of gender, to illustrate in what ways the physical educations teachers talk about girls. This study found that there are several parallel constructions of girls in physical education. Girls were often described as passive participants, despite a high presence level. They were considered taking up less space when it comes to both opportunities to speak and the usage of space in the classroom. We found that girls were also considered affected by body ideals and norms. They were described as task-oriented and as having a critical attitude of the content and purpose of the physical education class. This study was an attempt to highlight the norms and ideals that surround young girls in physical education today.
