Sammanfattning: A change in legislation has resulted in that many of Sweden’s municipal landfills were closed in the beginning of this century. After landfill completion, the oper-ator is responsible for at least 30 years to take action with regard to the protec-tion of human health and the Environment. In contribution Swedish landfill owners are facing increasing demands on local leachate treatment due to a change in sludge strategy at the sewage treatment plant. This report is intended to try the theoretical implementation of a modular leachate treatment system in three different case studies, Albäck, Måsalycke and Rönneholm in Scania, Sweden. The system is based on a vision of a flexible small scale leachate treatment plant. Each cleaning step should withhold one or several treatments. Leachates were in general characterized as methanogenic, influenced by the high organic content in the landfills. Treatment requirement could be traced primarily to leachate content of nutrients, suspended solids, BOD and COD. Heavy metals are present but, with a few exceptions, in low con-centrations compared to compiled leachate data from Swedish landfills. The results show that the concept of modular treatment can theoretically be used as a treatment for leachate streams with an annual flow less than 20, 000 m3. For larger flows the modules can be implemented as a complement to exist-ing leachate treatment. By taking stakeholders opinion, legal requirements and general guidelines in consideration treatment techniques were evaluated and suggested for the implementation mainly resulting in the following treatment series; 1) Aeration and sedimentation 2) Combined biological and physical sepa-ration filter. In addition a filter stage containing sorption media can be added as a separate module, or as a filter layer. The practical capacity of the concept is still to be evaluated and all of the case studies were found suitable for imple-menting a pilot plant.
