Urban och rural maskulinitet - en diskursiv analys om manliga identiteter skildrade i rurala rum

Detta är en Kandidat-uppsats från Lunds universitet/Institutionen för kulturgeografi och ekonomisk geografi

Sammanfattning: This essay aims to analyse discursive power structures between rural and urban environments and how these are expressed through character portrayals of men in rural environments. The essay will also examine whether or not a relation between the discursive power structure (between the rural and urban) and a hegemonic masculinity can be found within the source material. The source material consists of a Swedish movie, two Swedish commercials and a chapter from a Swedish fictional book. The theoretical base of the essay consists of Connells theory about multiple masculinities, discourse and power theory and urban norm theory. For the analysis of the material a discourse analysis has been used as method. The conclusion of the essay is that urban men are portrayed in a favourable way whilst the rural men are portrayed as being gender unequal and deviant. In these portrays an urban norm is reflected – an outlook of the urban as norm and the rural as deviant. However, there is an exception made in the commercials, where the rural are portrays in a favourable way. A relation between the discursive power structure (between the rural and urban) and a hegemonic masculinity is found in the Swedish movie but is not visible in the remaining source material.
